The DC-9 Series had various different versions, some of them beeing customer
specific versions. Swissair ordered a DC-9 tailored to their needs called the
DC-9-51, with higher capacity and bigger range than the previous models. The
-51 was 2.5 meters longer than the -41 and 4.5 meters longer than the -32, which
were in service together with the -51. The production of the DC-9-51 was delayed
due to financial problems of Douglas, which then had to merge with McDonnell
Douglas - hence the lease of the DC-9-41 from SAS. This was the last airplane
to be called DC-9, the later DC-9-80 was already called MDD MD-80.
Swissair operated 12 aircraft, but was not happy with it due high noise and
ordered another customer specific version, the DC-9-81, which was ordered together
with Austrian Airlines.
