Portugália (Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Aereos SA) is a regional airline based in Lisbon, Portugal. It operates scheduled international and domestic services from Lisbon and Porto, as well as European charter services. Its main base is Portela Airport, Lisbon with a hub at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, Porto.
The airline was established on 25 July 1988 as a joint-stock company, but had to wait two years before it could start services, due to a delay in air transport liberalization. It started operations on 7 July 1990 with a flight from Lisbon to Porto. It also flew from Lisbon to Faro that same day. It started operations with scheduled domestic and international charter flights, as scheduled international flights were not then permitted under Portuguese legislation. International scheduled flights started in June 1992 from Lisbon and Porto.

After a legal dispute with Portuguese Restaurant Chain Cervejaria Portugália, the Airline changed its name to PGA Portugália Airlines in the mid-nineties. |
In 1999 Swissair decided to take over a 42% stake in PGA. Whilst this acquisition never took place due to EU regulatory concerns, the airline did eventually enter the Qualiflyer Alliance as a full member. They did however not have any aircraft with Qualiflyer Logos or similiar.
Swissair continued interested to buy a stock in TAP Air Portugal, which also entered the Qualiflyer alliance, so that the two portuguese carriers stopped being competitors and started working together. The Collaboration continued after SAirGroup's Collapse, and in 2006 TAP Announced it will fully take over PGA.
Today PGA Portugalia is fully integrated into TAP Portugal. The Brand name is still used on domestic and iberian (and some european) destinations, as on the smaller planes of TAP. The Airline as a company is however dissolved and the Flights carry TAP Flight numbers. | ![]() |
