The MD-11 is a modernised, slightly stretched and re-engined development of
the DC-10. Launched on December 30 1986, the MD-11 was the result of a two year
study to find a replacement for the DC-10. First flight occurred on January
10 1990, certification was granted in November that year, and the first one
was delivered on December 7th, 1990 to Finnair. Main Improvements over the DC-10
were a new two-man Cockpit, a stretched fuselage and better performance.
Swissair initially ordered 12 Aircraft, and deliveries began 1991. Four further
new aircraft and four ex-LTU Aircraft were later added to the fleet bringing
it to a total of 20 units. After Swissair collapsed 13 units were taken over
by its Successor, Swiss International Airlines, and were replaced by Airbus
A340's in 2004.
